This is the Christian mindset: we are no longer defined according to our earthly identity, but our spiritual identity means we are descendants of Abraham because of our union with Christ who is the true seed of Abraham (see Gal 3:16). It is worthy of note that in just a few paragraphs before today’s verse, Paul said these words:

Because Jesus could have referred to the prophets of old as 'our fathers', the saints who are now members of Christ can also refer to them as 'our fathers’. You see, when Christ came, he came as a Jewish man with Jewish ancestors. This is because Paul understood that everyone in Christ now has the same ancestry as Christ.
